Responsibilities
Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Tax Specialist is the primary point of contact for the company’s indirect tax matters process (sales and use tax, etc.), which requires applying specialized expertise to all aspects of the company’s business transactions. The incumbent’s core responsibilities include overseeing the indirect tax return process (sales and use tax, etc.), account reconciliations, managing indirect tax audits and assistance with tax planning projects, as needed. Additionally, the Tax Specialist will assist in other areas of tax, such as federal and state income tax compliance and reporting.
- Administer all aspects of the company’s sales and use tax reporting process.
- Review and approve monthly and quarterly sales tax filings.
- Gather required information for use tax remittances.
- Coordinate receipt and review of sales tax exemption certificates and maintain in electronic files.
- Prepare and maintain schedules of sales by state for state tax allocation purposes.
- Prepare and maintain filings with regulators associated with the company’s business license, sales tax license, business privilege taxes, gross receipt taxes, etc.
- Assist external and state accountants with sales tax audits and year-end audit.
- Ensure successful completion of the company’s sales and use tax filings.
- Minimize tax liability through sound and informed application of laws and regulations.
- Assist with the monthly closing of books.
- Continually improve and document internal processes.
- Perform additional duties that may be assigned as necessitated by business demands.
- Review sales and use tax returns, to ensure compliance with state and local tax laws and regulations.
- Serve as a primary point of contact internally, addressing tax-related inquiries and providing proactive advice to minimize tax liabilities and optimize financial outcome.
- Collaborate with other departments to implement tax strategies that align with overall financial goals.
- Research and interpret tax laws and regulations to stay abreast of changes and developments and communicate potential impacts to internal stakeholders.
Ideal Candidate Will Possess the Following Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or another related field
- 3+ years of relevant tax experience in either public accounting or a corporate tax department required.
- Proficiency in sales tax software and technologies (e.g., Avalara).
- Proficient with MS Office suite of products.
- Detail and deadline oriented.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
