About the Office of Financial Aid

The Office of Financial Aid is dedicated to supporting all students as they navigate questions of college affordability, including applying for federal and state aid. We are mindful that affordability remains a prominent barrier to post-secondary matriculation and are committed to working together with families to addressing concerns with affordability. Our staff is trained to support historically underserved students, including first-generation students and families, throughout the financial aid process.



The Office of Scholarships is dedicated to awarding scholarships to deserving students while striving to be informative, responsive, resourceful, compliant, professional and sensitive to students, faculty and donor needs.

Overview of Position

The Assistant Vice President for Financial Aid and Scholarships serves as the primary campus leader for all student needs related to financial aid and scholarships, and serves as a collaborative partner, together with the Division of Academic Affairs, in executing the University's financial wellness and financial literacy programs. This role supports and facilitates the academic goals of our students through a student-centered approach in providing financial aid and scholarship services with exemplary customer service. The AVP for Financial Aid and Scholarships provides innovation, leadership, and vision in supporting the unique needs of UTEP students who are primarily first-generation students of low socioeconomic status. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and is a vital member of the Enrollment Management Leadership Team.

Hiring Department: Enrollment Management

Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm

FLSA status: Exempt

Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Purpose of Position

Essential Functions

Manages and oversees the quality and integrity of student financial aid and scholarship services.

Oversee the management of federal and state institutional financial aid funds.

Leads the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Scholarships in providing exemplary student services.

Provides strong, collaborative support to the Vice Provost for Advising, Academic Success, and Student Support in the administration of the University's financial wellness and financial literacy programs.

Proactively applies best practices, leverages aid, and utilizes effective models to help yield the undergraduate class, and support the enrollment and retention of undergraduate and graduate/professional students.

Establish a strategic plan for student financial success that reflects the individual circumstances of students in our southwest border region.

Drive the development of creative funding models for the use of scholarship funds alongside other sources of financial support.

Represent UTEP in state and national conversations related to student financial needs and affordability in the changing higher education climate and how to best-serve our student demographic.

Oversee the administration and compliance of financial aid and scholarship programs and the implementation of new programs and processes.

Provides strategic and visionary leadership for financial and scholarship office by applying policies that support UTEP's mission of access and excellence.

Offer effective and collaborative support of the University's financial literacy program, which empowers students and families to confidently make well-informed choices about a wide range of financial decisions.

Work collaboratively with on- and off-campus partners, building strong, transparent relationships and representing the Office of Student Financial Aid at state, regional, and national conferences and policy meetings. Act as a leading campus advocate for the value and importance of financial aid.

Collaborate with campus leaders to identify opportunities to improve student services, including simplifying processes and implementing new approaches, and identify any new scholarship funding.

Develop strong external partnerships that support the vision of the Division of Enrollment Management and the University.

Lead various committees in order to support all aspects of financial aid administration, loan aversion, and affordability.

Additional duties and projects as assigned by the Vice President for Enrollment Management.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Required Qualifications:

Education: Master's Degree

and

Experience: 5 (Five) years of progressively responsible leadership in student financial services (financial aid, scholarships, and/or financial literacy) in a higher education setting

Demonstrated successful experience in leading a student financial service operation in a higher education setting

Extensive knowledge of financial award processes and regulations including knowledge of military benefits, Title IV, and resources for international students

Ability to navigate and resolve financial aid compliance issues

Ability to analyze and interpret federal and state regulations, professional and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents

Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written

Demonstrated experience in working with students and families to create financial options that meet students' needs

Proficient technical skills in data management, data processing concepts, and student information systems

Proven track-record as a role model in customer service

3 (Three) years of experience supervising and leading staff members

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral degree

Spanish fluency

8 (Eight) years of progressively responsible leadership in student financial services (financial aid, scholarships, and/or financial literacy) in a higher education setting

Experience working with first generation students of low socioeconomic status

5 (Five) years of experience supervising and leading staff members

Experience with Banner Student Information System and record imaging systems
