Position Summary
The Art and Design Department at the University of Southern Indiana seeks candidates for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Art History, position to begin August 2025.
Duties/Responsibilities
The Art and Design Department at USI invites applications for an Art Historian who is committed to teaching, has excellent communication skills, engages actively in research and scholarship, and participates in service to the department, college, university, and their discipline. The ideal candidate will have college teaching experience beyond Graduate Assistantships, will be interested in study abroad opportunities, utilize engaging and student-centered pedagogies, and will have proficiency with relevant research databases. Preferred areas of art history scholarship include Medieval through Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, Modern, Contemporary, African, Indigenous Americas, and/or Gender Studies.
Teaching duties of this 4/4 teaching schedule will include a two semester Western Art History Survey, and upper-level special topics courses. The candidate will be motivated and productive in their research and scholarship and will regularly participate in their art historical professional organizations. The candidate will also serve the department, college, and university on committees and in other capacities (including advising) as needed by the university.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Art History or have that Ph.D. completed by hire date and be capable of teaching a variety of Art History courses.
Applicants should have a record of scholarly research and be committed to continued scholarship.
Applicants should have a record of leadership and/or service.

The Art and Design Department at USI offers BA and BS degrees in Art with concentrations in Art History, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interactive Media Design, Photography, and Studio Art, and a separate major in Visual Art P-12 Teaching. It also offers a BFA in Art with concentrations in Graphic Design, Illustration, Interactive Media Design, Photography, and Studio Art. Minors in Art History, Art Teaching, Digital Video, Graphic Design, Photography, and Studio Art are also available.
